“We are in the company of friends – people of faith and passion, with commitment to justice and courage to make peace,” said General Secretary Rev. Dr. Collin Cowan as he affirmed the presence of members, resource persons and representatives from organisations who had gathered for the 2016 General Assembly of Council for World Mission. .
Outlining the purposes of the gathering as “celebrating oneness in Christ, reading the signs of the time and discerning God’s leading” the General Secretary in his welcoming address paid tribute to those who had worked hard to make the event possible. The host church, Presbyterian Church of Korea, former staff member Rev. Kyungin Kim, the Assembly planning team and staff colleagues were appreciated for their hard work and significant contributions.
Rev. Dr. Cowan indicated that the agenda of the Assembly would be shaped by the theme, Healing, Hope in Action. Placing the “broken, groaning creation” among the focal points for action, the General Secretary invited those present at the Assembly to make their unique and diverse contributions in pursuit of healing and hope.
